There is a peculiar contradiction at the heart of modern stress management: we know that stress lives in the body — tight shoulders, clenched jaws, shallow breathing — yet most of our tools for dealing with it are cognitive. We talk, we reflect, we reframe. Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises, or TRE, takes a different route entirely. It works from the body upward, using the organism's own built-in shaking mechanism to discharge stored tension without requiring you to understand, narrate, or even consciously process what your body is releasing.

The Mechanism: Why Shaking Is Not Random

TRE was developed by David Berceli, a somatic therapist who spent years working in conflict zones and noticed a consistent pattern: after explosions and other traumatic events, people's bodies would spontaneously tremble and shake — but they would almost always try to suppress the shaking, tightening their muscles to make it stop. Animals in the wild do the opposite. A gazelle that narrowly escapes a predator shakes intensely for a brief period, then stands up and walks away as if nothing happened. The shaking, Berceli hypothesized, is not a symptom of distress but a recovery mechanism — a way for the autonomic nervous system to discharge the massive energy mobilized during a threat response, returning the body to baseline. TRE is essentially a method for deliberately activating this natural mechanism, not only after acute trauma but for the accumulated low-grade tension of ordinary modern life.

The Exercises: A Series of Gentle Fatigue Patterns

TRE consists of seven exercises, all designed to gently fatigue specific muscle groups, particularly the psoas, which sits deep in the core and is heavily involved in the fight-flight-freeze response. The sequence typically begins with ankle and hip stretching, moves through leg and pelvic work, and culminates in a fatigue posture — usually lying on the back with feet together and knees apart, the 'butterfly' position — where the legs, once fatigued, naturally begin to tremor. The tremors are not violent or dramatic; they are subtle, involuntary micro-movements that look and feel like a gentle internal vibration. The practitioner's job is simply to let them happen, not to control, amplify, or suppress them.

Step-by-Step: What a Session Looks Like in Practice

A typical session takes 20 to 40 minutes. After warming up with the seven exercises, you lie on the floor and allow the tremors to begin naturally in the legs and pelvis. You might notice them spreading upward — to the abdomen, chest, or even the jaw. There is no need to direct the process. You simply breathe, stay aware, and let the body do what it already knows how to do. Sessions usually end by deliberately stopping the tremors — rolling to one side, stretching, or simply placing a hand on the area and breathing. This stopping step is an important part of the method, not an interruption: it teaches the nervous system that the release is safe, voluntary, and bounded by your own control.

Common Mistakes and Misconceptions

The most common mistake is treating TRE like a workout — pushing through the fatigue exercises aggressively, trying to make the shaking bigger or more dramatic. The tremors do their most useful work when they are gentle and allowed to follow their own pattern. Another frequent issue is fear of the tremors themselves — people sometimes feel embarrassed or alarmed by involuntary movement, and tighten up to suppress it, which defeats the purpose entirely. A third misconception is expecting cathartic emotional releases; most TRE sessions are surprisingly undramatic. You may feel lighter, more spacious, or simply more tired afterward, without any obvious 'breakthrough.' The work is cumulative and subtle, more like tuning an instrument than striking it.

Who Should Be Cautious

TRE is generally safe and low-risk, but certain people should work with a certified practitioner rather than self-teaching, especially those with a history of severe trauma, PTSD, or dissociative conditions. For these individuals, the tremors can sometimes surface material faster than the mind is ready to integrate. Pregnancy, recent surgery, and certain neurological conditions also warrant medical clearance before starting. For most people, however, TRE is a gentle, self-directed practice that can be learned in a few guided sessions and then done independently at home.

What Makes TRE Different from Other Somatic Practices

Unlike yoga, which uses postures to stretch and strengthen, or breathwork, which regulates the nervous system through the respiratory pathway, TRE works through a mechanism most people have never deliberately engaged: neurogenic tremor. It does not require flexibility, focus, or athletic ability. It does not require you to talk about your problems or even identify what is troubling you. In this sense, it is perhaps the most purely body-first method in the somatic toolkit — a reminder that the body has its own intelligence for processing stress, one that predates language and reasoning by millions of years of evolution.

Building a Sustainable TRE Practice

The protocol recommends doing TRE two to three times per week initially, then tapering to once a week or as needed once the baseline tension has decreased. Many practitioners report that after a few months, they can sense when their body 'wants' to shake — a subtle internal signal — and can then do a short session without the full warm-up sequence. The practice becomes less about following a rigid protocol and more about responding to the body's cues. Over time, the goal is not to eliminate stress entirely, but to give the nervous system a reliable, repeatable method for returning to equilibrium — a skill that, in a chronically overstimulated world, may be one of the most practical forms of self-care available.

TRE is not a panacea, and it does not replace therapy, medication, or the need to address the real-world sources of stress. But as a free, self-directed, and physiologically grounded tool for discharging accumulated tension, it offers something rare: a way to help the body release what the mind cannot always reach on its own.
